Jerry Wayne Holmes, 71, of Doerun, Georgia, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
The son of the late Marion D. Tushouse Holmes and the late Naval Commander John Anderson Holmes, Mr. Holmes was born January 14, 1954, in the Naval hospital in Pensacola, Florida. He graduated from Coronado High School in Coronado, California, and then from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Holmes also completed additional coursework at Lee University, Georgia Southwestern, Darton College, Albany State University, Valdosta State University and Middle Georgia State University.
Mr. Holmes began his career in education in 1980 as a teacher with the Dougherty County School System in Albany. In 1993, he transferred to the Colquitt County School System. When he retired in 2014, Mr. Holmes was a technology teacher at Willie J. Williams Middle School. He also worked for Albany State University and Andrew College. During his career, Mr. Holmes was twice named a STAR teacher and was instrumental in helping many students win at the state technology fair. Most importantly, he was known for helping boost middle schoolers' self-esteem and inspiring students to discover how to pursue their interests as careers.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Tammy DuBose Holmes; his children, John Christopher Holmes (Kristen) of Seattle, Washington, and Julie Anne Holmes of Atlanta; grandchildren, William Stewart Holmes and Justine Holmes of Seattle, and Senora Holmes of Atlanta; his brother, James "Jim" Roger Holmes of Encinitas, California; several nieces and nephews; and many former students he considered his chosen family.
