Evelyn Georgeann Kendrick Mitchell
MOULTRIE - Mrs. Evelyn Georgeann Kendrick Mitchell was born January 3, 1946, the daughter of George Bubba Kendrick and Evelyn Bernice Cox Kendrick. She departed this life on August 22, 2019.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Mother Easter Baptist Church. Interment will be held in Strong Memorial Garden with repast to conclude in the Emory H. Hopkins Fellowship Hall of Mother Easter Baptist Church. Reverend John W. Greene, Jr. will officiate with Reverend Freddie Castle assisting. Kareem Sanders, Gerald Burke, Ronald Burke, Kenneth Burke, James Hightower, W.J. Williams, Jr. and Keldrick Wiley will serve as pallbearers. Al Ball, Willie Frank Wilson and Nathaniel Smith will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
She gave her life to the Lord and joined Mother Easter Baptist Church at an early age. She attended Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, North Carolina. She began her journey to higher education via Nashville TN, where she attended Fisk University, graduating with a B.S degree in Education.
Evelyn's love for teaching led her to Sarasota Florida, where she began working for Sarasota County Board of Public Instruction. She taught science at MacIntosh Jr HS, Sarasota, FL and Venice HS, Venice, FL. She later attended La Verne University in La Verne, California receiving her M.A. Degree in Administration Supervision. Continuing her quest for knowledge Evelyn attended Tuskegee Institute gaining her Ed.S Degree in Administration Supervision. She returned home to Moultrie and was appointed as the FIRST black Principal and Administrator for Colquitt County Board of Education. Spreading her love for learning everywhere she went, Evelyn worked as Principal of Vereen Elementary School, Principal of the 1st Pre-K program in the Colquitt County School System. In addition to her principalities she became Director of the Comprehensive disciplinary program, director of gifted education program.
Her generous heart and kindness had no bounds, she was truly one-of-a-kind. Through her many thoughtless actions, she often volunteered her time through service associations. She was a member of numerous organizations; such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Women's Federated Club, Queen Esther chapter #67 Order of the Eastern Star and The Evelyn Kendrick Circle.
She loved to cook, sing, read, public speaking, and teaching. She is proceeded in death by her grandfathers, grandmothers, mother, father, aunt, sister, and brother.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter Senja Beth Dawson (Benny Dawson, Jr.), Mario Newcomb and Tonya Whitehead; god-children Pamela Simmons (Sherman), W.J Williams and Shonta Melton; special friends and family Maude Burke, Carleen Powell, James Wynn, Gerald Burke (Bernice), Sandra Farrell, Kenneth Burke (Betty), Mary Bridges, Ronald Burke (Wylean), Leatha Barge, Patricia Dunn and many more.
The Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Omega Service will be held 6:00, Friday, August 30, 2019 at Luke Strong And Son Mortuary.
