Dr. Emory Dalton McGlamry Jr. Obituary

Stone Mountain, GA - STONE MOUNTAIN — Dr. E. Dalton McGlamry, 94 years old, died June 14, 2025. A visionary leader, educator, and pioneer in podiatric medicine, Dr. McGlamry's impact on the profession and the community is immeasurable. His legacy will continue to influence the field for generations to come.

Dr. McGlamry was instrumental in advancing the role of podiatric surgeons within the medical community. He paved the way for hospital privileges for podiatric physicians, advocating for greater recognition and integration alongside MD and DO colleagues.

His work helped shape the scope of practice to include comprehensive surgical care of the foot and ankle. He was the founding author of McGlamry's Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Surgery, a foundational textbook used by practitioners and students worldwide. He also established the nation's first three-year podiatric surgical residency program at Doctor's Hospital, setting a new standard for postgraduate training.

In 1975, Dr. McGlamry founded The Podiatry Institute, a nonprofit educational foundation committed to advancing the field through continuing education. Today, the Institute continues to fulfill its mission: "To be a supportive global network of members, colleagues, and friends that enhances the quality of life for patients with foot, ankle, and leg disorders through innovative education, research, and service." The Institute has received national and international recognition for its leading role in promoting excellence in podiatric medicine and surgery.

Dr. McGlamry also served as the editor for the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association and was the recipient of numerous Lifetime Achievement Awards. While the accolades are many, his greatest contribution is the daily impact his work continues to have on the profession. He was born in Moultrie, Georgia on February 26, 1931.

After graduating from Moultrie High School, he attended Emory at Oxford and then the University of Georgia. He received his podiatric medical degree from Temple University.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rebekah Culbreth McGlamry and their 3 children: daughter, Glynn McGlamry Banks and her husband, Dr. Alan Banks, son, Clifford McGlamry and his wife, Nancy Tant McGlamry, and son, Michael McGlamry and his wife, Catherine Scheuman McGlamry.
