Jean Jean Johnson Gray MOULTRIE - Mrs. Wilma Jean Johnson Gray, 72, of Moultrie, Georgia was born February 15, 1947 the daughter of Johnny Johnson and Retha Mae Washington Johnson Roberson. She departed this life on Monday, March 4, 2019 at her residence.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Mother Easter Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Strong Memorial Garden with repass to conclude in the E.H. Hopkins Fellowship Hall of Mother Easter Baptist Church. Reverend Joseph D. Davis will be officiating, Reverend Lorenza Davis, Reverend John W. Greene, Jr. and Minister Darren Roberson will be assisting. Otis B. Richardson, Jr., Gregory Richardson, Glenn Tuff, Alfred Brown, William Ivey, Spindola Merritt and Marlon Zimmerman will be pallbearers.
Wilma, affectionately known as Jean, joined Willow Grove Baptist Church at an early age and later joined People's Community Church in Silver Spring, MD. Jean graduated from William Bryant High School in 1965. She was crowned Miss William Bryant High in 1965. After graduation she relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where she attended Howard University graduating with a B.S. and M.S. Degree in Education. She worked for 33 years in the Washington, D.C., Public School System where she retired in 2004 and 7 years in the Prince George County, Maryland, Public School System at Davis Elementary School and Kimball Elementary School where she retired again in 2011 as an educator but continued mentoring up until her passing.
She was her mother Retha's only child, but she had a sisterly bond with Sherolyn, Otis, and Gregory and was like an aunt to Sherolyn's daughters, Temira and Teryn Davis. As she was the oldest grandchild, she was a big sister to all her cousins.
Jean was a member of numerous organizations: Nu Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Women's Educational Society (Maryland), the Alfresco Club of Moultrie, committee for the Ram Round-up just to name a few. She loved to shop, read, teach, cook, organize and eat blue crabs.
She married Gary R. Gray on December 3, 1988 and was blessed with 27 wonderful years of marriage and endless joy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, two aunts, Dorothy W. Richardson and Geraldine W. Johnson; two uncles, Ernest Washington, Charles Lee Washington, and pet, Shaka Gray.
She leaves to cherish her memory one stepson, Asar (Mario) Gray of Hampton, VA, one brother, Heath Johnson of Silver Spring, MD., three step-grandchildren, Brianna Gray of Worcester, MA, Milani Gray of Hampton, VA, and Taedon Gray of Tucson, AZ; her precious child/pet, Saba Gray; two aunts, Edna W. Marshall of Miami Gardens, FL, Mary Lacey of Glenn Dale, MD.; one uncle, Freddie D. Washington of Atlanta, Georgia; three special cousins/sibling, Sherolyn R. Davis (Rev. Joseph), Gregory Richardson, both of Moultrie, GA., Otis B. Richardson, Jr. (Gail) of Atlanta, Georgia; special cousins, Temira Davis and Teryn Davis, Precious Ivey (William), all of Moultrie, GA., mother-in-law, Lucille Muse Fortune of Tappahannock, VA., five sisters-in-law, Theresa Ann Gaines (James) of Cheverly, MD., Claudia Gray of Tappahannock, VA., Pamela Gray-Shepheard of Camden, NJ., Remaitha Polite (Edward), Patricia Davis (Earl), both of Sicklerville, N.J., one brother-in-law, Barry Johnson (Toris) of North Ridgeville, OH., god-mother, Nazirre Banks of Moultrie, GA.; five special friends, Carolyn M. Enoch of Jacksonville, FL., Patricia Rosier of Washington, D.C., Sandra and Sonny Fields of Albany, GA., and Lucious Thomas of Moultrie, GA., and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
Luke Strong And Son Mortuary, Ltd. is in charge of arrangements.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of my dear friend. Having presided at Gary's Service in Maryland, my heart is so full. I always looked forward to Jean coming home to Maryland so that we could get together and catch up. My deepest condolences to the family. I will always remember and love her.
