Walter's Story

Mr. Walter Darrell Wiggins, 60, of Adel, Georgia, passed away July 8, 2017 at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida. He was born in Cairo, Georgia on March 27, 1957 to the late Darrell and Marjorie Wiggins. He was raised in Moultrie, Georgia, was a graduate of Moultrie High School and Valdosta State College, and served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He moved to Cook County thirteen years ago.

Walter was a lifelong learner, fascinated by the works of great thinkers. He studied philosophy and religion, and was actively pursuing a theology degree from Candler School of Theology. Walter was member of the First United Methodist Church of Moultrie where he was a teacher for The Genesis Sunday School Class.

He was passionate about nature and enjoyed traveling the world to enjoy God's creations. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially being in a canoe paddling down a river. His favorite place to be was on the Okefenokee Swamp.

He was a farmer and operated a produce business at the Tallahassee Farmer's Market and served as a manager of the Brickyard Farmers Market at the Centre of Tallahassee where he was known as "The Apple Man of Tallahassee." He loved the growing process, his produce, and especially his customers in Tallahassee.

Mr. Wiggins was a devoted family man and loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly. He is survived by his wife, Crystal Hancock Wiggins of Adel; a son and two daughters: Joe Wiggins, Mary Beth Wiggins and Becky Wiggins, all of Moultrie; a step-daughter and son-in-law, LaRae and Travis Sills of Adel; five grandchildren: Aden Carroll of Moultrie, AdaLynn Jonsgaard of Adel, Vicki Ann Wiggins of Moultrie, Madison McDaniel and Audree Sills, both of Adel; three brothers and sisters-in-law: Brad and Stephanie Wiggins of Moultrie, Garry and Leslie Wiggins of Moultrie, and Ben and Jana Wiggins of Watkinsville, Georgia; nephews: Blake Wiggins of Athens, Georgia and Landen Wiggins of Moultrie; and nieces: Brooke Wiggins of Valdosta, Leah Grace Wiggins of Watkinsville and Camden Wiggins of Moultrie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-son, Randall Keith Tillman, II.

The family will receive friends Wednesday July 12, 2017 from 6 until 8 PM at Boone Funeral Home South, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave., in Adel. The funeral service will take place Thursday July 13, 2017 at 11 AM at First United Methodist Church of Moultrie, 409 1st St. SE in Moultrie, with Rev. Stephen Grantham and Rev. Larry Bird officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 8879 Val-Del Rd. in Adel. Doug Durland, David Wynn, Dyke Strange, David Flowers, Ken Ryan, Neal Christopher, Marty Merritt, Darrin Dinkins, Buddy Peacock, Steve Kudela and Lynn Ellison will serve as active pallbearers and the honorary pallbearers will be Matt Knight and Johnny Reid. Jana and Blake Wiggins will sing "Amazing Grace." Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made in honor of Mr. Wiggins to the Okefenokee Swamp online at www.okeswamp.com.
