DOERUN, Ga. -- Ralph Cleburne "Cleve" Edwards, 79, of Doerun, Ga., died Monday, June 19, 2017 in Dacula, Ga.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00AM Friday, June 23, 2017 at Cobb Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Benton and the Rev. Stanley Norman officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites, will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Thomasville, Ga.
Casketbearers will be Justin Fordham, Ryne Cole Maness, Beren Farlow, Keith Fox, Jim Saunders, Skipper Saunders, Mark Mobley, Clint Horne and Corey Oakes. Honorary casketbearers will be Jack Leverett, Mickey Crowell, Verlyn Brock and the Doerun High School Class of 1956.
Born June 4, 1938 in Albany, Ga., he was the son of the late Ralph Woolard Edwards and Kathryn Lockwood Edwards. He graduated from Doerun High School in 1956 and attended Georgia Southern College for two years. Mr. Edwards played high school basketball and baseball for the Doerun Deers. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Doerun and later a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He was in insurance sales for over 40 years and retired from American General Life Insurance Company. Mr. Edwards was an avid fisherman, enjoyed growing a garden even in buckets, was a Georgia Bulldog fan and enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, Falcons and the Hawks. He was a member of Doerun Masonic Lodge and the local Shriners Chapter. A special thanks to The Guest House in Gainesville, Ga., and all of the staff and volunteers who provide such a great level of care and compassion to seniors. Daddy attended The Guest House weekly for the last four years. It is a tremendous service for those caring for their loved ones in their later years ... Daddy enjoyed sharing his stories, "being part of their helpful staff" and making new friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Larae Whittington Edwards; sister, Joann Edwards Oakes; brother-in-law, Cyril Jerome "C.J." Oakes.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammi Edwards Maness and Keith of Dacula, GA., Terrie Edwards Fordham and Glenn of Talmo, Ga.; four grandchildren, Courtney Fordham and Beren Farlow of Flowery Branch, Ga., Justin Fordham and Alexandra of Birmingham, Ala., Haley Maness Fox and Keith of San Francisco, Calif., Ryne Cole Maness and Kailey Hinton of Dacula, Ga.; great-granddaughter, Riley Capri Maness of Dacula, Ga.; nephews, Sandy and Dave Oakes of Doerun, Ga., Larraine and Ralph Oakes of Savannah, Ga.; great-nieces and -nephews, Corey Oakes and Megan of Gray, Ga., Amber Oakes Porth and Andy of Columbia, S.C.; and a special friend Helen Sharp of Columbus, Ga.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM -8:00PM Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Cobb Funeral Chapel.
