RENO, Nev. -- Karen S Martin, 74, passed away on Nov. 24, 2017, at home from complications relating to a stroke.
She was retired from the Salvation Army as the Reno Emergency Shelter Director for over 8 years, and the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, as an Employment Security Counselor for over 17 years, and was an active member of the PEO for 30 years. During her time as shelter director, Karen was voted Reno Woman of the Year. She worked hard to obtain her Social Worker's degree from the University of Nevada, Reno, and cherished her license and related outreach she accomplished for hundreds of families throughout Northern Nevada.
Karen is survived by her husband of 54 years, Curtis L.; her son, Curtis R. (Rochelle) of Fallon, NV; daughter Anna (Scott) Carroll of Carson City, NV; and 2 granddaughters, Samantha Martin and Stella Carroll. As an only child, she was adopted by the 14 siblings and spouses from her husband's family of, originally, Moultrie, Georgia. Karen was often known as "Mother Martin" to many local families, and "MomaKat" to her girls from work. She is predeceased in death by her parents, Stella Tokarczyk Rucker, and Ray (Cowboy) Rucker.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, Jan 13, 2018 at 10 AM at the Salvation Army Reno Chapel, located at 1931 Sutro St., Reno, NV 89512
