March 09, 2019

Carmen Barika White ATLANTA - Ms. Carmen Barika White, 41, of Atlanta, Georgia was born in Albany, Georgia in 1978 - the third daughter of Robert and Ellen Everett White. She departed this life on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at her residence.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Luke Strong and Son Mortuary. Burial will follow the services in the Cobb Suncrest Memorial Gardens with repass to conclude in the George Walker, Jr. Fellowship Hall of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
Early on, she developed a love of music and singing. She started singing on stage in elementary school and quickly proved to local audiences her captivating talent. She moved with her family to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1990 where she attended Fannie C. Williams Middle School. There, she continued to develop her musical talents and was the first chair trumpet player in the band. Later, she would attend Ben Franklin Magnet High School, a school for academically gifted youth. At the same time, she was a student at the performing arts high school, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (also known as NOCCA) with a focus in voice.
After graduating from high school, she went on to study music at Florida State University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music with a certificate in opera performance.
Soon after, she performed in musical theater productions in Florida and, later, she toured with productions in France and Spain. Then, she was off to New York City to pursue her passion for theater and music. She performed off-Broadway and also self-produced original performance pieces as well as a musical.
Later, she returned to New Orleans where she worked in the burgeoning film industry there. In 2011, Carmen was featured as a singer in the film "The Paperboy" and its accompanying soundtrack. She was also featured as a singer in "Pawnshop Chronicles" in 2012. Carmen also lent her voiceover talents to the movie "Varla Jean Merman and the Mushroomheads" in which she portrayed the voice of little Varla Jean. She also appeared on the Russian TV series "Bolshoi Jazz" (filmed in Moscow) in which she was a featured singer and personality.
Carmen was a seeker of The Spirit. She grew up a member of Bethel AME Church in Albany, Georgia, and then Cornerstone United Methodist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. She continued to remain a faithful believer all of her life.
Carmen is survived by her father and stepmother, Robert and Jean White of New Orleans, Louisiana; 2 sisters, Crystal White and Alison White, both of Atlanta, Georgia; an aunt, Mildred Ellis of Cinicinnati, Ohio, and an uncle and aunt, Frank and Sharon White of Chicago, IL, as well as numerous cousins.
Carmen was a daughter, sister, and friend. She was known for her bubbly, outgoing personality and people were naturally drawn to her energy. She touched many.
Luke Strong And Son Mortuary, Ltd. is in charge of arrangements.

Carmen and I were members of the New Orleans Opera Chorus during the 2002 production of Porgy & Bess. She quickly became a beloved friend to me and the entire cast. Following Porgy, Carmen enlisted me to videotape her "Green" Concert at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans. Also during that time, I helped her prepare a video package for an upcoming audition. In short, I was privileged to share some quality moments with a beautiful angel. Thank you Carmen Barika White for your spirit, your gift...for simply being you. To God Be the Glory!!!
